Brilliant stuff!
If you haven't read it, run like mad to the nearest bookstore. The man writes like a god. I'm thinking of a Blincoe Collection, like some sort of shrine... After reading White Mice, I want to read all his other books.

Sir James Marriott the Lucinda D. slavery in Asia
a great novel of the western and Oriental mind, of Slavery and ships that sale from Asia . This book is a fast read and the writer brings details and events clearly to your mind. Cruelty and the carrying trade as it was called ..from 1850 to 1861 an inheritance of a life that the hero would not have chosen.

Who Are We Now?: Christian Humanism and the Global Market from Hegel to Heaney
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Notre Dame Pr (January, 1998)
Author: Nicholas Boyle
Average review score:

The Best Book I've Read in Several Years
Boyle has a capacity to take in the whole of political theory, philosophy, economics, literature, culture, and faith with the deepest insight and with a powerful integration of vision and thoughtfulness. The book has been gestating for many years, but is of timely importance.

In the world of the global marketplace, Boyle maintains, we are all proletarians, 'down to the last yuppie among us.' We are--each and every one of us--consumers and producers, but globalized capitalism pressures us to disregard and forget our place as producers, encouraging us to be mere 'punctual consumers,' unattached to place, to time, to our bodies; solely 'there' as ciphers in the vast exchanges of capital. We thus become slaves to our forgetfulness, while wages, job security and opportunities, and our connectedness to our work and our control over it all diminish. Who said Marx is dead?

But Boyle is no knee-jerk marxist. He masterfully traces the course of modernity and its philosophical blindspots through the political and economic shifts of 19th and 20th century Europe, calling us to an awareness of the moral and religious underpinnings of our meaningful identity as we find it in literature and in daily life--as both producers and consumers. He unapologetically considers himself a 'Christian humanist,' and this perspective affords him a valuable and critical eye toward the dehumanizing effects of globalization, as well as the grounds for hope we may find therein.

Actually the 2nd Edition of 'Exploring GIS'
See my review of the first edition. This edition is just the first edition improved. I'm not sure what the 'Wie' in the title is, but it isn't on the book. This is just the second edition of 'Exploring Geographic Information Systems' by Nick Chrisman. A great second book on GIS for those who really want to understand GIS.

Wildflowers of Yosemite

Authors: Lynn Wilson, Jim Wilson, and Jeff Nicholas
Average review score:

Great Backpacking Book
For the last decade or more, I have lugged one or two flower books along on backpacking trips in the Sierras, slowly learning to identify the gorgeous and the not-so-gorgeous plants that live in the Mountains of Light. I have come to appreciate several qualities in a field guide: clear photographs that capture the essential character of the plant; brief and clear descriptions that give not only common names and clues for identification but also information on the plant's preferred location and season and an interesting fact or two; clear organization to help me locate flowers that are old friends as well as new ones; and, most important, light in weight! This book scores high on all criteria. It's only rival so far is WILDFLOWERS 3: THE SIERRA NEVADA by Elizabeth Horn.

William the Rebel Prince

Authors: Nicholas Davies and Mark Saunders

Fantastic!!
This is such a wonderful book on him. It gives a lot of info on him and a better perspective on who he is. It makes you realize that he is just a normal person like everyone else. A lot of books have tried to do this. Some do a great job...but not like this book. If u are an avid Prince William fan or if you just wanna know more about him....this is definitely the book for you.

Williamsburg Before and After: The Rebirth of Virginia's Colonial Capital
Published in Hardcover by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (December, 1988)
Authors: George Humphrey Yetter and Nicholas A. Pappas
Average review score:

Breathtaking, crystal clear documentation
I have checked this book out at the library looking for 'GOOD' photos of some of the older homes and the resconstructed homes from the 1700's. The photos are absolutely breathtakingly crystal, clear, show wonderful asthetic views, and give a simple and linear time frame of ownership and construction/demolition, reconstruction of many of the homes in the Williamsburg area. This book is worth every penny if you buy it for research and historical purposes. Of all the books on Williamsburg that I have ever read (dozens and dozens), this one is the most excellent!

Willy and Wanda Adventures: Circus Baron (#21)
Published in Paperback by Hiddigeigei Books (June, 1976)
Authors: Willy Vandersteen and Nicholas J. Lahey
Average review score:

A classic by the master
This comic book, originally in Dutch, is one of the finest ever made by Willy Vandersteen. A classic here in the Netherlands and Belgium and hopefully in the US too. Pre-school reading is not the excact phrase to describe the contents of this book. A lot of Willy and Wanda fans are well beyond their teens, as am I and I enjoy(ed) this book very much. I have the complete Willy and Wanda (Suske en Wiske) collection in my bookcase (about 200 books)and this one is absolutely one of my favorites.

A Wind from Nowhere
Published in Hardcover by Faber & Faber (December, 1979)
Author: Nicholas Stuart Gray
Average review score:

Delightful, charming, wry, humorous. Magic for all ages.
As a hard-core sci-fi reader I refuse to read Sword and Sourcery novels. But this little book has opened my eyes. Full of likable, fun characters that you can identify with, this book leads you on quests and through mysteries. You will meet witches, dragons, kings and princes and, of course, cats!

Unfortunately all 8 of Mr. Gray's books are out of print. I have ordered the other (7) through Amazon, but in the meantime, I would happily swap this book for any other of Mr. Gray's. The swap can be permanent or temporary, as you like. Thank you. -John
